An open letter to the President and Mrs. Obama August 2009 My dear Mr. President and Mrs. Obama, America is in crisis: economically, morally, spiritually, and politically. Who will deliver us? America has suffered crises time after time after time. From the very beginning, Americans suffered early troubles. In 1607, Captain John Smith wrote of trouble in the Virginia colony of Jamestown: But now was all our provision spent, the sturgeon gone, all helps abandoned, each hour expecting the fury of the savages; when God, the Patron of all good endeavors in that desperate extremity so changed the hearts of the savages that they brought such plenty of their fruits and provision as no man wanted. . . . The
Lord delivered the Virginia colonists from starvation in 1607. And
in 1620, William Bradford of Plymouth Colony wrote: By a great drought which continued from the third week in May till about the middle of July, without any rain and with great heat for the most part. . .they set apart a solemn day of humiliation to seek the Lord by humble and fervent prayer in this great distress. And He was pleased to give them a gracious and speedy answer, both to their own and the Indians’ admiration that lived among them. . .yet toward evening it began to overcast, and shortly after to rain with such sweet and gentle showers as gave them cause of rejoicing and blessing God. . .And afterward the Lord sent them such seasonable showers, with interchange of fair warm weather as, through His blessing, caused a fruitful and liberal harvest, to their no small comfort and rejoicing. For which mercy, in time convenient, they also set apart a day of thanksgiving. The
Lord delivered the Plymouth colonists from starvation in 1620. And
in 1631, deputy governor and later governor of the Massachusetts Bay
Colony, Thomas Dudley wrote: After much sickness, famine, poverty, and great mortality (through all which God, by an unwonted providence, carried them), they are now grown up to a people, healthful, wealthy, politic, and religious. Such things does the Lord for those who wait for His mercies. Irrefutably,
just like God preserved the Israelites in the wilderness, God preserved
the colonists in the American wilderness. And time after time after time,
our God-fearing forefathers called upon the name of the Lord; and He
delivered them from sickness, starvation, poverty, death, and enemies. In
fact, when George Washington was elected the first President, he knew the
task was too great for man without the aid of the Lord God Almighty.
So, on April 30, 1789, the day he was inaugurated in New York
City, after the address Washington and all the other officials, Senators,
Representatives and the Vice President walked to St. Paul’s Chapel and
prayed for two hours. Washington and Congress had a formidable task before them. It was their duty to set up and start a new government. They knew that the task was too great for the limited minds of men. Thankfully, our Founding Fathers were wise enough to humbly acknowledge their limitations and call upon the name of the Lord for guidance. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). Washington lacked wisdom to found a new nation, but was wise enough to humble himself before the Lord and ask for Divine guidance. Consequently, Washington was an outstanding leader and the new government prospered under his wise guidance. But great changes have come to the world since the time of Washington. Woe unto us for we have changed from a nation of righteousness to a nation of unrighteousness! Woe unto us for we have changed from a nation of industry to a nation of indolence! Woe unto us for we have changed from a nation of truth to a nation of lies! Woe unto us for we have changed from a nation of virtue to a nation of vice! Woe unto us for we have changed from a nation of liberty to a nation of license! Professing ourselves wise, we have become fools and ruined our nation. There
must be a great change of spirit in America! As
America’s First Family, you must be the first to humble yourselves and
call upon the name of the Lord. America’s
First Family must be the first to acknowledge that without Divine guidance
our great nation is doomed for destruction. The White House must be known
as a house of fervent prayer and supplication.
The First Family must openly and unashamedly declare the words of
Joshua 24:15: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua,
as leader of the Israelites, exhorts the people to choose to serve the Lord and
forsake strange gods in order to receive God’s blessings. Joshua warns: “If ye
forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you
hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good” (Joshua 24:20).
Likewise,
President Obama must exhort Americans to choose to serve the Lord and
forsake strange gods in order for God to bestow national blessings upon
America. There
must be a great change of spirit in America, and it must start in the
White House. The
Book of Jonah records that the Word of the Lord came to Jonah: “Arise,
go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness
is come up before me.” So,
Jonah arose and went into Nineveh and cried: “Yet forty days, and
Nineveh shall be overthrown.” And
when the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid
his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
Then he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh
by decree of the king that the people should fast and be covered with
sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God and turn from their evil way.
And
they repented and turned from their evil way and God spared that great
city. There
must be a great change of spirit in America! And
it must shine from Washington, D.C., the capital city and seat of
government of the United States. Capitol Hill is the heart of the nation.
Because of its noble elevation it commands attention. Capitol Hill
must be the city on a hill. “Ye are the light of the world.
A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14).
A city that is set on a hill is a shining example and looked up to.
A city that is set on a hill radiates the light of Truth. A
city that is set on a hill radiates the light of Truth; and the light of
Truth will shine down on the people. And
the
light of Truth will shine down on the people in the city. And
the
light of Truth will shine down on the people in the country. And
the
light of Truth will shine down on the people in the plain. And
the
light of Truth will shine down on the people in the valley. And
the
light of Truth will shine over land and over sea. Alas, there is only one way to be the light of Truth. You must first know the Truth.
If
ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall
know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John
8:31, 32 Howbeit
when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. John
16:13 We
must read and study the whole Bible so that the Holy Spirit – the Spirit
of Truth – will guide us into all Truth.
And with that Truth, we can rebuild America into the light of the
world: a
nation set
on a hill that cannot be hid. There must be a great change of spirit in America! Woe unto us for we have changed from a Christian nation to a polytheistic nation! Woe unto us for we have gone a-whoring after other gods! We
must seek the Lord by prayer and supplication.
We must repent of our rebellious spirit against God: “If my
people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray,
and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (II
Chronicles 7:14). But
if we don’t repent of our rebellious spirit against God we are
doomed to destruction. Instead
of a nation set on a hill, we will be a nation cast down. Listen, if we
forsake God and His statutes, He will take our inheritance away from us,
will cast us out of His sight, and will bring evil upon us (II Chronicles
7:19 -22): 19
But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I
have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; 20
Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land
which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my
name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb
and a byword among all nations.
21
And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to
every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the Lord done
thus unto this land, and unto this house?
22
And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the Lord
God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt,
and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them:
therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them. Again,
if we forsake God and His statutes, He will take our inheritance away from
us, will cast us out of His sight, and will bring evil upon us. Righteousness
exalts a nation. But an unrighteous nation is in danger of
damnation. We have forsaken the Lord God of our forefathers, which brought us out of the land of Europe; and brought us through starvation, sickness, poverty, wars, and countless other troubles. There
must be a great change of spirit in America! There must be a great change of spirit in America, and it must start in the White House: As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Respectfully
yours, Karen
